Beat the Heat: How Summer Temperatures Can Affect You and Your Medications
Whether you're cheering on the Bulls at the ballpark, tending your garden, or taking a stroll along the American Tobacco Trail, summer in Durham offers plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors. But as temperatures and humidity rise, it's important to know that some medications can increase your risk of heat-related illness.
Certain prescription medications – including some used to treat high blood pressure, heart conditions, allergies, and mental health conditions – can affect your body's ability to stay cool or properly hydrated. In addition, some medications may contribute to dehydration. Hot weather can also impact the effectiveness of medications if they are stored improperly or are delivered in a way that has them exposed to very high temperatures en route to your home.
To stay safe during our hottest months:
• Drink plenty of water throughout the day, unless your healthcare provider has advised otherwise.
• Take breaks in the shade or air conditioning when spending time outdoors.
• Store medications in a cool, dry place – not in a parked car, garage, or direct sunlight.
• Watch for signs of heat-related illness, including dizziness, headache, nausea, confusion, or unusual fatigue.
At Senior PharmAssist, we're committed to helping our Durham-area neighbors stay healthy year-round. If you have questions about your medications and how they may be affected by the summer heat, our team is here to help!
