Medicare FAQs

I have a patient who is over 65, but she does not have Medicare because she just moved to this country. Where can she go to get help paying for her medications?

Since she is 60 or older, your patient may qualify for our primary coverage to pay for her medicines, depending upon her income and where she obtains primary medical care. If she does not qualify for our direct financial assistance, we can help her obtain and maximize assistance from other sources. At Senior PharmAssist, we do not ask those in need about their legal status; we are only concerned whether individuals are residents of Durham County.

I have a Medicare patient who is not sure what Medicare-approved drug plan he has. Can Senior PharmAssist help?

Yes, we have several ways to figure out what his coverage is. Please tell him to call us at 919-688-4772.

I am overwhelmed by all of the different Medicare-approved drug plans from all of the private insurance companies. Is there one place I can go to find a link to the drug plans’ formularies?

Yes, click here to go to our Links page, where you can find links to the private insurance companies that offer Medicare-approved drug plans and their respective formularies.

I have someone who has Medicaid but has now turned 65 and is confused about how to get her new drug benefit. What should I tell her?

If she lives in Durham, please have her call us because we can work with Medicaid and the Medicare-approved drug plans to ensure she enrolls in the plan that covers her medications at the least cost to her.

Do we need to call Senior PharmAssist to make a referral?

You can call us directly or just have your patients call us; a medical or social referral is not necessary.

I have heard about the ChecKmeds NC program? Does Senior PharmAssist participate?

Yes, the pharmacists at Senior PharmAssist have been providing medication therapy management (MTM) for years and have special training in geriatric pharmacy practice. In late 2007, North Carolina began reimbursing pharmacists through a new program – ChecKmeds NC – to provide medication therapy management services to seniors 65 and older who have Medicare-approved drug benefits. Senior PharmAssist is supportive of this program and participates with ChecKmeds NC.
